There is a wealth of historical interest in the area. This being border country, there is a particular preponderance of castles: those listed below, not to mention also Raglan, Caldicot and others.

Goodrich Castle

Our closest castle out of the very many in this border region. The castle guards the river crossing on the old Roman road from Monmouth to Gloucester. Built by the Normans, further improved in the 13th century, remains survive the civil war.

The so called ‘Three Castles’ route, only ten minutes away. Great for a days touring, as all are in a tranquil rural setting. Skenfrith has a riverside location and large flat grassy area, with pub and tea room close by.

Iconic ruins in flat valley basin with level walks possible along the river. Pubs/restaurants nearby.
